High School. But no college coach seemed to notice. That's why he went to prep school for a year. For the record, his given name is Michael, and compared with Chachi Charles, 26 and T-Baby Stephen, 23 , Spike wound up with the best nickname in the family. Hannah, 15, does not have a nickname, but it's still early.
When he was playing little T-ball, we bought him a pair of spikes and he never took off his spikes. He wore them everywhere. He wore them in the driveway playing basketball. To this day, his father insists Albrecht is a better baseball player than basketball player, but he gave up the sport as a freshman in high school to concentrate on basketball.
Through high school, Albrecht did all of the right things. He had terrific games in high school, but college coaches didn't notice because he didn't pass the eye test.
He trusted what he was seeing. And what he was seeing was a kid who took care of the ball regardless of the pressure, had complete tempo and pace of the game.
Until Meyer came along, Carroll was at his wit's end — he couldn't understand why more schools weren't interested in the best point guard he ever had coached. He's modest. He loves his teammates. He wants them to perform to the best of their ability. He understands how to fill whatever gap is presented during the game. In fact, most of those outside of the Big Ten only know of the Michigan junior guard because of his unique nickname, "Spike," which pays homage to a childhood favorite.
I'm a big baseball fan Baseball was like my favorite sport growing up. When I got them, I just started wearing them everywhere. I was wearing them out to church, out to eat. People just started calling me 'Spike. His nickname "stuck," and so has his value, which sometimes slides under the radar but shouldn't be discounted.
For the past two seasons, the 5'11", pounder has found a way to peak when coach John Beilein needs him to most. Due to the loss of Nik Stauskas, Beilein's going to need another experienced guard to help ease the transition and knock down buckets from wherever.
It was a tall order to fill, but Spike held his own, clocking valuable minutes while the star of the show took a breather. With a title on the line, Albrecht came off of the bench and scored 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting 4-of-5 from three in the loss.
His sophomore year we would not have won the Big Ten title or made a second straight trip in the Elite Eight without him. Beilein added Albrecht would have a job offer from him the day he graduates, per Nick Baumgardner of MLive.
Former Michigan star and current member of the Philadelphia 76ers Nik Stauskas tweeted following Albrecht's announcement:. Congrats to SpikeAlbrecht on an amazing college career. The game is gonna miss having you on the court.
